The Kibbutz was established in August 1977. Two groups of
young adults after completing their Army service decided to build a
new Kibbutz in the Etzion Block, increasing settlement of the area. They
joined the two other Kibbutzim
that were already in the area.
Arriving at the chosen place on a hot
summer day in the month of August, and upon seeing the the area, these
young men and women decided to make this "hill" their home. This was the moment were the big "Who
was the first one to step on
the Kibbutz ground? " argument started.
September saw the celebration of the establishment
of the Kibbutz. They wanted to call the Kibbutz, " Migdal-E'dar", after the
biblical Migdal-E'dar, and after the settlement that was there before the
Independence war. The National Name Committee decided that there is still a
chance to find the biblical Migdal-E'dar, and wouldn't allow these young
pioneers to use the name. Having no choice but to call the place another name,
it was decided to
call home Migdal Oz.
